JavaOne 2014

This week the JavaOne conference took place in San Francisco again. Lot’s of people visited San Francisco for both JavaOne and Oracle OpenWorld. There were some (strong) rumours that the number of attendees was far higher than last year. So it looks like the industrie or at least the Oracle part is doing quite well.
The conference had selected some very good sessions. There was lot’s of cool stuff like robots, quadcopters, car computing, 3D printing, wave gliders, GPU coding, Raspberry Pi etcetera. Unfortunately no new Java version was released recently so the language talks focused on a bit ‘older’ features of the language such as streams and Lambda’s.
One of the interesting topics was the use of reactive architectures. Quite some speakers talked about various topics to support reactive architectures. Some included the really popular term of microservices. Other sessions gave more information on using (Scala), Akka, Play and Spray to enable future development.
Another interesting thing at the conference was the use of Netbeans. It looks like Netbeans is getting more and more populair. Quite a few presenters used Netbeans and talked about their positive experience using Netbeans. Netbeans might be worth investigating as it seems to be quite a serious competitor for Eclipse and IntelliJ.
I personally had the honor to present three sessions myself. The session information and the sheets can be found below.
Using the Same Docker Container for Development and in the Cloud and the sheets
Run Java Applications with Docker on the Raspberry Pi and Other Platforms and the sheets
Beyond the Basics of SonarQube: Improve Your Java(Script) Code Even Further and the sheets
The sessions will become available on Parleys as well.
So now all we have to do is wait for the next JavaOne!
